What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry means that you will be sedated during your dental treatment. Sedation is provided by either a sedation dentist or an M.D. anesthesiologist who works side by side with the dentist during your care. All of your dental treatment is performed while you are in a safe, painless, twilight sedation.
The result is that you feel no anxiety, no fear, no pain, and then wake up after work is completed. In less than an hour you are ready to leave the office. And best of all, you feel like you had a pleasant nap with little or no memory of the dental appointment. It's safe, it's effective, and it makes possible the care that you so desperately need.
All types of dentistry can be done while you are sedated, from simple cleanings to complete smile makeovers. It's not just the dentistry that you need; it's also the cosmetic dentistry that can make for beautiful and healthy smiles.
And it's not just about helping fearful patients. For those who want to avoid the inconvenience of scheduling multiple regular dental appointments, or those who simply find it difficult to sit for long appointments, sedation dentistry is the answer because all your dentistry can be completed in only one or two appointments.
How can Sedation Dentistry help you?
Sedation Dentistry is the answer if you have:
Our office is now utilizing the new and exciting technology known as digital radiography. With the introduction of high resolution digital sensors, we have now reached the point where the diagnostic capabilities of digital systems surpass the diagnostic capability of film. This is the first fundamental change in radiology in over 100 years. The system replaces film with a special sensor. The sensor detects radiation and transmits information to a computer. The software then immediately displays the image on a computer monitor that we have in every operatory for the last few years. This technology has some clear advantages over conventional dental radiographs.
CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a multi-instrument system that allows dentists to create and implant custom-fit ceramic restorations in a single appointment. The system consists of an infrared digital camera, a computer with 3-D imaging software, and a milling unit with diamond blades for quick, precise and highly detailed construction of restorations.
The CEREC system can produce any permanent, single-tooth ceramic restoration, including crowns, onlays, veneers and fillings. Unlike metals and alloys, ceramic is similar to the natural tooth, so cracking is minimized because it expands and contracts at about the same rate as the tooth during temperature changes while eating. In addition, CEREC offers benefits over traditional restoration construction such as fewer injections, less drilling, less material removed from the damaged tooth, and minimal time commitment.
The process is simple. First, Dr. Newman examines your tooth and determines the proper treatment. After application of anesthesia, the damaged part of the tooth is removed and an optical impression (digital photograph) is taken. The computer converts this data into a three-dimensional virtual image that allows Dr. Newman to design the restoration that's right for you. Dimensions of the restoration are sent to the milling machine, which shapes a ceramic block to create the restoration in 10-20 minutes. Finally, the restoration is tried for fit in your mouth, polished and bonded to your tooth.
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are a family of problems related to your complex jaw joint. If you have had symptoms like pain or a "clicking" sound, you'll be glad to know that these problems are more easily diagnosed and treated than they were in the past. Since some types of TMJ problems can lead to more serious conditions, early detection and treatment are important. The causes of TMJ disorders are considered multi-factorial and may be related to the following:
No one treatment can resolve TMJ disorders completely and treatment takes time to be effective. There are two basic types of treatment for TM Joint disorders: surgical and non-surgical, but it is generally agreed that in most cases the non-surgical approach should be taken first in an effort to restore comfort, and improve jaw function to an acceptable level.
